With the rapid growth of pickleball in our community and across Nova Scotia, there is a wide range of skill level within the various clubs. Pickleball is a very inclusive sport, and the more skilled players are very helpful in coaching the new players coming into the game. However, as an individual improves their skill level, they want to play with similar skill level players to make the play session challenging and fun.
At the PLCSA outdoor courts, we schedule pickleball play sessions by skill level groupings (e.g., 2.0-2.5 Novice, 2.75-3.25 Recreational, 3.5-4.0 Intermediate/Competitive, 4.0+ Advanced, and All Level sessions that are social play) to provide a safe, challenging, and fun pickleball experience.
All-Level sessions facilitates playing across the various skill levels (consider it social play). For players that are playing down in skill level, you are asked to be mindful of your level of play (e.g., smashing the ball, etc.), so as not to injure or discourage the lower skill level players. Similarly, for players playing above their skill level, be mindful that you are playing a faster, more technical game and can be exposing yourself to potential injury and changing the level of play for the other players.
To determine your skill level, check-out this self-assessment tool on the Pickleball Nova Scotia website: https://pickleballnovascotia.com/self-assessment-guidelines/
Annual paid members will have access to booking court time and organized play sessions by skill level during peak morning and evening hours. You'll know you have your spot before you go! We use the Pickleheads app to book - annual paid members will be able to see the available sessions/courts.
Bookings can be made up to 7 days in advance.
Organized play sessions - reserve your spot; sessions with 2 courts will have 12 spots, sessions with 4 courts will have 22 spots.
Reserve a court – one annual paid member books the court & can invite other annual paid members of their choice. Everyone playing during reserved court time must be an annual paid member.
What if I want to bring a guest who is visiting with me from out of town?
If your guest is going to be visiting for any amount of time, we recommend they sign up for our annual membership (best value, and their donation helps to maintain our programs and the courts).
If you would like your guest to join you during peak reserved court times for a few games, please email porterslakecourts@gmail.com to arrange an eTransfer for those games and access to the Pickleheads app to reserve a spot.
Or, simply have your guest fill out the free community membership form and join you during open community play times.
All organized sessions are rotational play (reserve your spot on the Pickleheads app):
4 players to a court.
As players arrive, they go at the end of the line (on the benches) if all courts are already in use.
Standard PB scoring, serve to get a pt.
Server calls the score.
Games go to 9 (win by 1) if players are waiting, 11 (win by 2) if not.
Players rotate into games in order. If you have already played with someone, aim to switch partners for the next game.
Ensure fair play and be considerate of all play levels (sign up for sessions that match your play level).
Put nets in the storage bin after play (if no one else is waiting); especially at the end of the day.
First come basis.
Courts can be used for 45 minutes at a time (if players are waiting).
Courts can be used for pickleball or tennis. Standard set-up is pickleball on Court 1a & 1b, and tennis on Court 2. Players are responsible for switching out the nets as needed.
If someone is waiting for a tennis court when 4 courts are being used for PB, players from 1a and 1b OR 2a and 2b will both need to finish their 45 min playtime before the entire court is changed over to tennis. Please work together to make this is fair as possible for everyone playing and waiting.
Ensure fair play and be considerate of all play levels.
Put pickleball nets back in the storage bin after play (if no one else is waiting); especially at the end of the day.
